Sparky

MY ROLE
Brainstorming, User journey mapping, User personas, User testing, Conversational design, Copywriting, Prototyping

CHALLENGE
At a UX Hackathon organised by MobileUX, Orange and Oracle, I worked with 4 other people (2 UX designers, 1 researcher and 1 developer) to design a chatbot that explores new opportunities for conversational design.

PROCESS

We began by brainstorming ideas in the health sector, then decided to focus on the topic of occupational health. Our research into occupational health showed that good health is good for business and better workplaces have better financial results.

After conducting an interview and creating our persona, we found out that our user’s biggest problem is coping with stress. Stress is one of the biggest causes of health problems in the workplace. Stress, depression or anxiety and musculoskeletal disorders accounted for the majority of days lost due to work-related ill health (15.4 million days lost and 6.6 million days lost respectively). Our persona suffered from multi-tasking and an excessive workload.

Our research showed helpful methods for reducing workplace stress, such as forming positive relationships, exercising more, eating healthy and nutritious food, getting enough sleep and prioritising.

USER JOURNEY

We focused on micro-interactions which make handling work-related stress easier by implementing proven techniques that improve mental health. We planned to encourage physical activity. An abundance of research exists that showcases exercise and its ability to reduce stress.

THE BOT

INTELLIGENCE
Learns your schedule, habits and needs
Knows when to prompt interaction
Remembers your preferences
Provides up-to-date solutions
Diversifies activities based on history
Integrates with third-party apps (Spotify, Headspace…)

THE PERSONALITY
Name Sparky
Characteristics friendly, upbeat, empathetic, timely
Language colloquial, stimulating, candid, reassuring

As our persona suffered enough from multi-tasking and having to use different platforms/devices/apps in her daily work, our chatbot had to find a way to cut through the noise in her busy life. So instead of more dos and don’ts, Sparky became more like a friend who cares about our wellbeing.

1. Finds the right time to check in based on the user’s daily rhythm and offers more options to choose from

2. Gets data on the user’s feelings and availability/capacity

3. Offers an exercise solution in a simple and playful way

4, Gets feedback on improvement and further needs
